If you have a large collection of DVDs and Blu-rays gathering dust since you switched to streaming services, you can rip them to your hard drive, along with any digital movies you’ve downloaded, and make the whole collection accessible over your network via a media server.

1. Step-up Media Server Software in Windows.

There is an in-built software available in Windows 7,8, and 10 but you have to take steps to activate so that you can see and hear your media files on other devices. Few steps are given below which you can follow to enable basic media server capabilities.

Step 1: Open Start and go to Control Panel, search the media using the search box and select Media Streaming Options under the Network and Sharing Center.

Step 2: Click on the Turn on Media Streaming button to turn on the media streaming server.

Step 3: Choose the Media Streaming Options for Computers and Devices, and click on the OK button to apply the settings.

Step 4: You can also customize the streaming settings but the default settings are also good and allow all devices on your local network to access the media file in your PC’s media libraries.

You can go into Windows Media Player and under the stream pull-down menu, select Automatically Allow devices to Play Media.

2. Using Third-Party Media Server Software.

There are several tools you can use to set up your server, such as Plex (plex.tv) and Emby (emby.media), however another choice to consider is the recently updated Serviio.

Following Steps to Set-Up Your Own Media Server With Serviio.

Step 1: Install the server file for your device (Windows, macOS or Linux), then start the Serviio service and launch the console.

Step 2: Once it’s connected, you’ll be ready to add your media. Expand the Library section on the left and click Shared Folders. Click the Add button to link your media folder.

Step 3: Select the media type contained in the folder, browse to the location and enter a display name. Click OK. When you’ve added some folders, click Save.

Step 4: You can add more locations later if required. Your library should automatically update when you add new files to the monitored folders, or you can force a refresh.

Step 5: You can view the connectivity of your server under Status and choose the network adapter to use if you have more than one. Click Users to create user accounts.

Delivery lets you manage transcoding and subtitles. When your server is fully configured, you can connect to it using any DLNA device.
